HMS Endeavour

The famous British barque acquired by the Royal Navy in March 1768, in which Captain James Cook undertook his first voyage. The three masted “Endeavour” (originally named the Earl of Pembroke), was built in 1764 and was used for carrying coal between England and Sweden. The “Endeavour” left England on August 26, 1768 with a crew of 94. She returned in July 1771 after a highly productive voyage during which Cook discovered the Society islands, mapped the entire New Zealand coast and explored the eastern coast of Australia. After Cook’s return to England the “Endeavour” made three journeys to the Falkland Islands before she was sold by the Admiralty. She returned to work as a collier but later became a whaler. It was in this capacity that, in 1790, she ran aground off Rhode Island and was damaged beyond repair.
