New Artist: Harland Young

Harland Young was born in 1924 in the Ozark Mountain Community of Neosho, Missouri, while spending most of his early years on a horse and cattle ranch in California. It was on this cattle ranch that Young developed the intense love and admiration of the outdoors and the West.
With the exception of a service period in the Air Corps during World War II, Young has been devoted solely to the pursuit of his two deep interests: art and horses. Determined to follow a career in art, he attended the famous Art Center College in Lost Angeles, where he was awarded a bachelor's degree in fine art.  After a period as a commercial illustrator, he opened his own studio in 1956 to devote full time to serious panting.
Through the years, Young has received many fine honors and tributes from his peers.  One of the most memorable occurred in 1970. Harland Young was chosen from the entire western art field to paint and present a portrait of John Wayne during Wayne's introduction as "Man of the Year" for the Greater Los Angeles Press Club. On hand for the presentation were many important dignitaries, including President Ronald Reagan, Ray Bolger, Dale Robertson, Gina Lolabrigida and a number of others.
In addition, Young's work was included in the Gallery Display and First Annual Scottsdale Sale, Inc. of Arabian Horses and Fine Art. His paintings have also been feattured in articles and on the covers of countless magazines including but not limited to The Intermountain Quarter, The Plate Collector Magazine, and The international Arabian Horse Association Annual Report.
While not only enjoying commercial success, Young has achieved critical success. Kirk Ford, art critic and columnist, "Harland Young is an artist who is the master of the fleeting moment .... a man who brings his subjects alive and in motion on canvas."
David Gee, editor of Coast Artist Magazine, "His paintings of animals tell best his feelings about beauty in nature. The movement he gives his horses, for example, may well be a way of experiencing through his creations a freedom not possible in a disciplined world."
From the time he opened his first gallery in 1956, the Harland Young story has been filled with success. His works are familiar to a wide variety of discriminating collectors, whether it be original oils, prints, bronze sculptures, or collector plates.
An admirer of the Impressionists and the great Western artists, Charles Russell and Fredrick Remington. Young has the rare talent of putting motion into his paintings and sculptures.  Resonant with rich colors and light, his works go one step beyond realism in capturing the events they portray.
